AI in Smartle? Maybe… But not yet.

We are already several months into 2025, and maybe it’s a little bit too late for some kind of AI-reflection post. Let’s do it anyway. Looks like AI is already everywhere – in online games, including free online word puzzles, in educational applications, in videos. Really everywhere. Except for a Smartle daily word puzzle. We haven’t integrated any AI-powered functionality in our game yet. Mostly because we simply didn’t have time to take a proper look into it. However, we think about it now and then and even wrote a blog post about possible future word game developments that will include AI.

One of the most useful things that AI could bring is personalized word puzzle difficulty. By analyzing player behavior and style of the game, AI could tailor experience to individual users, making the game even more enjoyable. Also it would make it possible to adjust game difficulty in real-time in Sprint mode suggesting letters that would be the best for the level of the player. Maybe it would be possible to achieve an optimal balance between game difficulty and satisfaction of winning.

Another interesting thing that we could introduce is the whole new word puzzle game mode. It could be a player competing against the AI. For example, a competition to see who can solve word puzzle first. And of course, players would have the ability to set the AI proficiency. It could be a complex setting, or just intuitively understandable easy/medium/hard levels.

Maybe not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about word puzzles, but AI could also generate reports. We have a lot of players with quite a long daily streak in our Smartle daily word puzzle game. Meaning that people often play several days or even weeks in a row. What if AI could analyze their playing behaviour across several days and generate a report which would reflect on which words were the most popular to use, which days were the most successful (or unsuccessful) to play word puzzle. Kind of like Fitbit gives the weekly repost of physical activity, our word puzzle game could give a summary of mental activity.

All this sounds really interesting to us and each of these looks like a decent next step. But is it really the best? Everyone is talking about AI, but is it really needed for a simple free online word puzzle like Smartle? Maybe it is better not to overcomplicate something that is already good enough? The fact that everyone is integrating AI wherever possible doesn’t mean that we need to do it.

And what if instead of introducing a new mode where players will be playing against AI we will have a mode where players can play against each other? Maybe that would be an even more interesting angle of our free word game? While AI sounds interesting, for now we have a much bigger list of non-AI features that we think would really make Smartle stand out among other word games online.

Looks like this blog post turned out to be a bit more philosophical than usual. We hope that you like our game and we are always open for your feedback - whatever it is about, we would be glad to hear from you and to learn what you think about our Smartle word puzzle game.
